One of the best parts of attending a conference in an amazing city is exploring the city itself. Don’t forget—while you’re soaking in all the technical knowledge and conversation that php[tek] has to offer, you still need to take time to touch grass! Chicago, the birthplace of modern architecture and home to deep-dish pizza, is a vibrant, historic city full of culture, world-class attractions, and stunning views of Lake Michigan. Whether it’s a stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk, a visit to the (free!) Lincoln Park Zoo, or an afternoon relaxing in the beauty of Millennium Park, the city offers plenty of ways to unwind and recharge.
Make the most of your trip by extending your stay. With the special conference hotel rate, you can enjoy Chicago before or after the conference and turn your php[tek] experience into a work-cation.
So, here’s your guide to making the most of your time in the Windy City.
The conference hotel, Sheraton Suites Chicago O'Hare, is conveniently located right outside the airport. When you arrive, you can walk in just a few minutes from the airport to the hotel (great if you're a light packer), or take the Sheraton's shuttle (perfect for those with a suitcase).
The Blue Line: The "L" train Blue Line runs from O'Hare Airport to downtown and all the city's hotspots. Buy a Ventra card from a CTA kiosk at any train station for $2.50 per ride (includes up to two transfers within two hours), or get a day pass for $5. Learn more about Ventra cards.
Getting from php[tek] to the Blue Line: The Sheraton offers a free shuttle every 15 minutes to O'Hare Airport, where you can catch the Blue Line. Alternatively, you can walk to the Airport Transit System (ATS), which also connects to the Blue Line.
Navigation: Google Maps isn't just for driving routes! It also provides excellent public transit directions. Just make sure you bring a portable charger for your phone.
Chicago Riverboat Architecture Tour: Cruise along the Chicago River and see what architects from around the world travel to see. Book your tour in advance!
Wrigley Field: Arrive the weekend before the conference to catch a Cubs game, or take a tour of this iconic 1914 ballpark. Learn more.To get there: Take the Blue Line to Addison, then bus 152 or a 15-minute Uber.

WurstCon
Don't forget the unofficial conference after-party tradition, WurstCon, where we take over one of the best hot dog joints in Chicago! If you know, you know - and if you don't, you will find out.
Bring Your PHPeeps Along
However you choose to explore the city, remember that the PHP community is here to explore with you. Post in Discord to rally a few other attendees, split an Uber, or plan a group outing. There’s no better way to experience Chicago than alongside new friends and colleagues, creating memories that last well beyond the conference.
